NBA free agency did not even open yet and it feels like it is over already.
According to a report from The Vertical on Wednesday, guard Chris Paul is going to opt in to his contract with the Los Angeles Clippers and the team is going to trade him to the Houston Rockets for Patrick Beverley, Lou Williams, Sam Dekker and a top three protected first-round draft choice.
The deal is basically a handshake agreement until the Rockets can clear some cap space to make the deal work officially. Paul’s salary for the 2017-18 season is $24.2 million and will have the option to sign a five-year max contract with Houston after 2018.
Paul also reportedly told the Clippers he was going to sign with the Rockets in the offseason. At least the trade brings something back for Los Angeles and allows Houston to clear some space to bring him in. It was probably the only way it was going to work out.
