The Los Angeles Kings are set to sign goalie Cal Petersen in August, LA Kings Insider reported Wednesday.

Petersen, the 2013 Buffalo Sabres draft pick, will become an unrestricted free agent when the Sabres draft rights expire on Aug. 16. Peterson, who is coming off a Frozen Four appearance with Notre Dame, will forgo his senior season to turn pro.

“I’ve spoken to Cal. At this time I think he’s going to probably move to free agency and we’ll go from there,” Sabres GM Jason Botterill told the Buffalo News. “Disappointed, but we’ll move on.”

Peterson will be able to fight for a backup job to begin his career.
