The BIG3 seems like a good idea on paper. Former NBA players basically playing on a 3-on-3 senior circuit and televising it is really a cool idea. However, the idea starts to unravel when your realize these guys are really out of shape and significant injuries can happen.

Jason Williams injured his leg in the first game of the BIG3 last week and will now miss 6 to 8 months, the Associated Press reported Wednesday. Corey Maggette is also going to be out due to lower leg surgery.

“We had four games and in those four games less people were injured than will most likely be injured in any single first game in the NFL this year,” BIG3 co-founder Jeff Kwatinetz said. “People are injured in the NBA all the time, unfortunately. Cars crash in NASCAR and these things do happen. We do believe that there was intensity that maybe everybody didn’t expect and there will be an adjustment period as the season goes on.”

The league shifts to Charlotte on Saturday.
