The Oakland Raiders and quarterback Derek Carr agreed to a five-year, $125 million contract extension on Thursday.

The NFL Network reported that Carr’s contract includes $40 million in fully guaranteed money and $70 million in total guarantees. Carr is also getting a $12.5 million signing bonus. Carr is now the highest paid athlete in terms of money per season.

Carr deserves this extension. He has elevated the Raiders from the bottom of the barrel to perennial contender in the AFC West. Though his season was cut short in 2016, he still managed to fire off 28 touchdown passes with only six interceptions.

Oakland is going to be set for the next couple of seasons. There is no time to waste to getting to the Super Bowl. If the New England Patriots’ window is closing, the Raiders’ window is wide open and now is the time to breakthrough.
