Right-handed pitcher Doug Fister opted out of his contract with the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday, according to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register.

Fister may have been told he was not going to be brought up to the major league roster. He had been pitching in Triple-A Salt Lake.

The 33-year-old could be a valuable asset to a team dead set on making the playoffs. He was 12-13 with a 4.64 ERA last year with the Houston Astros.
