Magic Johnson finally has his hands in the Los Angeles Lakers’ cookie jar and the rummaging around to organize it is going to be the soap opera of the summer, especially after his latest comment Thursday.
Johnson said in an interview with ESPN Los Angeles that the team’s only untouchable player is Brandon Ingram.
“I would say probably the only player that we would say, hey, we would probably not move is Brandon Ingram,” Johnson said. “I think that we’re excited about Brandon, his length, his size, his agility, his athleticism. And then when you think about, you know, he was a baby coming in, in his first year last season and we see that he really has a high ceiling and we’re excited about what he can possibly turn into.”
Ingram was the team’s No. 2 pick last year.
The controversy is going to come to a head as the NBA Draft approaches. Lonzo Ball is going to be the obvious target, but he comes with the baggage of his father and Big Baller Brand. But if the Lakers do get Ball, then a D’Angelo Russell trade is almost inevitable.
Los Angeles has a ton of options here to make moves, but everything Johnson does is going to be scrutinized and his comments already should make people wonder what the new president of basketball operations truly has up his sleeves.
