New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. signed the richest shoe contract for an NFL, multiple media outlets reported. The terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed, but ESPN reported the deal with Nike would make him more than he does with the Giants.
According to Nice Kicks, Nike matched Adidas’ offer in the final minutes of the so-called “match clause window.” The shoe-minded website reported the deal is worth up to $48 million over eight years.
The deal would also make him a brand icon for Nike and will give Beckham a chance to participate in campaigns outside football. ESPN reported that Beckham’s agent Zeke Sandhu and Beckham’s mother and business manager Heather Van Norman helped close the deal.
“It was a long process,” Sandhu said. “This proved he’s an icon.”
Beckham is entering the last year of his rookie contract with the Giants, which will make him just over $1 million. The shoe deal will make him more money.
Currently, Beckham’s on-field talents are parallel to his social media influence which makes him a big target for brands like Nike. He boasts 8.3 million followers on Instagram, 2.3 million followers on Instagram and 1.3 million followers on Facebook.
