There is certainly an opening for world’s No. 1 women’s tennis player with Serena Williams taking time off to start a family. Vying for position means winning matches and definitely talking trash to your opponents on and off the court. Eugenie Bouchard might be moving up in the trash-talk rankings after completely destroying Maria Sharapova last week.
The Canadian tennis star would not have Sharapova — or any cheater — play in her tennis organization. Bouchard told the Turkey’s broadcaster TRT World:
“I don’t think that’s right. She is a cheater and so to me, I don’t think a cheater in any sport should be allowed to play that sport again. It’s so unfair to all the other players who do it the right way and are true.”
Sharapova, a five-time Grand Slam champion of the sport, was suspended for 15 months after a doping violation. Sharapova has been under fire since being reinstated.
The Russian star won her first match since returning to the courts Wednesday in a first-round matchup at a German tournament.
Bouchard, who is ranked No. 59 in the world and is a 2014 Wimbledon finalist, still did not hold back when talking about Sharapova.
“I think from the WTA it sends the wrong message to young kids: ‘Cheat and we will welcome you back with open arms.’ I don’t think that’s right and definitely she is not someone I can say I look up to anymore.”
