Miami Marlins manager Don Mattingly comes from a storied franchise that had a long-standing tradition of no facial hair. Though Mattingly sported a mustache during his playing days, he wasn’t allowed to have any facial hair during his days as a Yankees coach. He allowed facial hair during his five years with the Los Angeles Dodgers, but when he got to the Marlins there was a facial hair ban.

Tuesday, the ban was reversed. The Marlins had a long-standing “unwritten rule” about facial hair. Though no real explanation was given about why the Marlins players couldn’t have facial hair — Jeffrey Loria and other Marlins brass enforced it.

Mattingly said the players still have to be groomed though. I guess having a crazy Justin Turner beard is a no go.
