Former Syracuse Orange and Boston Celtics player Fab Melo died in Brazil, ESPN reported Saturday.
The 26-year-old was playing professionally in Brazil. He spent two seasons under coach Jim Boehim in Syracuse before attempting to go to the NBA. He played six games with the Celtics in the 2012-13 season.
“He was a really good kid, and it’s not fair that he will be defined by one thing: a 10-page paper,” Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim told ESPN. “He worked his tail off to become a really good player and was a nice kid. We don’t know the cause yet. It’s so hard right now, so hard to believe. It’s a sad, sad day.”
Melo’s NBA career was short lived, but it came with a lowlight reel. Melo broke a folding chair while waiting with other rookies at a photo shoot and with the D-League’s Sioux Falls Skyforce, he concussed himself running into a door.
