A Stony Brook University men’s basketball player was charged with third-degree rape on Wednesday, authorities said.
Blair Mendy faces charges including third-degree rape, sexual misconduct and endangering the welfare of a child, Stony Brook police said. The 22-year-old is expected to be arraigned Thursday, according to the New York Daily News.
The details of the alleged crime haven’t been released.
Augustus Mendy, the player’s father and Palo Alto, Calif. banker, told the Newsday he was shocked by the charges.
“I think my kid was raised very well,” the father said. “I find it very incredible to believe. I taught him to be a gentleman, treat ladies well. I always taught him to make the right choice.’’
