Women’s college basketball is dominated by the University of Connecticut team. No other team has been as dominant as the Huskies over the last decade or so. Geno Auriemma has been the face for years.

However, on Friday night, Auriemma was not the talk of the sport. Instead it was Stanford head coach Tara VanDerveer.

VanDerveer joined the 1,000-win club after the Cardinal defeated USC 58-42.

“It’s a wonderful, wonderful journey for me,” she said. “This is a very big highlight of many highlights.”

VanDerveer joins Pat Summitt and Mike Krzyzewski as the only Division 1 basketball coaches to have 1,000 wins.
