Former USC and NFL running back Joe McKnight was shot and killed in Louisiana in an apparent road rage shooting Thursday night.
The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office said the shooting occurred at around 3 p.m. in the New Orleans suburb of Terrytown.
According to WKUE-TV, witnesses reported seeing a man in an Infiniti pull McKnight from his Audi and shot him several times after a verbal altercation. Witnesses told the station that the man waited for police to show up.
Authorities identified the shooter as 54-year-old Ronald Gasser. The man relinquished his handgun to police.
McKnight spent three years playing for the Trojans. He recorded 2,213 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns before departing school early for the NFL where he would be drafted by the New York Jets in the fourth round of the NFL Draft.
He spent the better part of his short NFL career with the Jets. He last played with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2014. He was coming off his first season in the CFL with the Saskatchewan Rough Riders.
McKnight, 28, is the second NFL player to be killed in New Orleans this year. New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith was shot and killed in a road rage incident earlier this year.
