The Cleveland Indians defeated the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday night, 3-0, to advance to the World Series for the first time since 1997.
Home runs from Carlos Santana and Coco Crisp lifted the Indians to the win. Cleveland received 4 1/3 solid innings from Ryan Merritt before turning the ball over to Bryan Shaw, who picked up the win. Cody Allen nailed down the save.
The Blue Jays won Tuesday to keep the series alive. But couldn’t get any runs across the board at home. The team only managed six hits total. Marco Estrada allowed three runs — two earned — on five hits.
The Indians advance to the Worlds Series for the first time since 1997. They lost that series in seven games to the Florida Marlins. The Indians haven’t won the World Series since 1948.
