The Pittsburgh Pirates might be coming into a fiery offseason situation with left-handed pitcher Gerrit Cole. Sources told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that Pittsburgh is unlikely to sign Cole to a contract extension. Cole’s agent Scott Boras could be willing to go to a three-year deal to buy out some of his years of arbitration, but the paper reported that the Pirates aren’t willing to do that. Cole will probably hit arbitration this year and will probably become a free agent after the 2019 season. Cole spent some time on the disabled list this year and recorded a 3.88 ERA and a 7.6 SO/9.
