The New England Patriots made a shrewd deal Thursday, acquiring linebacker Barkevious Mingo from the Cleveland Browns, the NFL Network reported. Mingo is set to join the Patriots in North Carolina later in the day.

Mingo was a 2013 first-round draft pick of the Browns. He has appeared in at least 15 games in his first three seasons, but only started 16 times. He has recorded seven sacks and 68 tackles in that span.

A trade for Mingo was going to happen after the Browns failed to pick-up his fifth-year option. Mingo going to the Patriots gives him a new lease on life because coach Bill Belichick has a knack for getting the best out of players who were cast off.

The Browns received a fifth-round pick.
