USC landed a huge commitment in Duke transfer Derryck Thornton, reported Friday. The Trojans needed a solid player after losing some key starters to the NBA Draft over the summer.

Thornton was a former five-star recruit who committed to Duke before the 2015-16 season. He averaged 7.5 points and 2.5 assists, but with the incoming freshman he knows he had to get out of there and landed at USC.

“He really got along with (associate head coach) Tony Bland, Enfield and the whole staff,” Thornton’s father, Derryck Thornton, Sr. told Scout. “He liked all four staffs but it was really the trust level at USC with Bland and the staff and the comfort of being home.”

Thornton will have to sit out the 2016-17 season, and will have three years of eligibility left.
