Things are changing for the Los Angeles Lakers. It seems like the flicker of hope that came with Kobe Bryant‘s retirement and Byron Scott‘s departure is now growing into a full grown fire.

Legendary point guard Magic Johnson is also stepping in to help some of its players. Johnson is planning on training with rookie point guard D’Angelo Russell this summer. This is only good news for Russell.

Johnson announced his decision to train Russell came on Twitter Sunday evening. Johnson said him and Russell had a productive lunch and both came to the conclusion about training over the summer.

There are plenty of things Johnson will have to mentor Russell on. First and for most is trying to stay out of the tabloids. Even though Johnson was the face of the Showtime Lakers, the landscape of social media is so broad and anything Russell does — like get into the affairs of other players — is something that he needs to stay off and out of.

Leadership on the floor is another thing Johnson can mentor Russell on. Russell’s second year is going to be even more scrutinized under a new coach and probably some new players. Magic stepping in to help is extremely exciting.
